Dear readers,
For four years we have published lists of our favorite DVDs in coincidence with the end of the year. These lists have been prefixed with “Best,” an effort to pronounce some authority in our selections. Because this practice is correlative among critics and review outlets, we’ve followed suit, but this year we’ve found it difficult to repeat the gesture. We read – and admire – other’s lists, but for us to make another is to do so with a pretense we should no longer feign. Furthermore, our selections in the past have been tallied, and this has disabled the inclusion of some of our individual favorites.
With a growing team of writers (which has more than doubled in the past year), we’ve opted to maintain our lists’ individuality—which is what we would like to think is perceived as one of the distinguishing tenets of our website. Our perspectives, locations, ages, and basic preferences vary greatly, and our past year-end features have stifled these traits. As such, we would like to present this year’s retrospective absent of any compilation.
Following are our words on what we recommend – both off- and, now, on-screen – in the past year.
