This is incontestably the Farrelly brothers’ worst film. Although mildly funny, the film’s humor is contrary to its principle theme to promote tolerance in its obscenely superficial main character—when Rosemary (an introverted, obese woman) cannonballs into a pool and depletes a noticeable portion of its volume or offsets the center of gravity of a canoe, it’s employed clearly for laughter, but by laughing at these scenes the viewer inherits the same critical flaws as the title character.
And the Farrellys are at their best with offensive material, admittedly (my favorite scene in their oeuvre involves a blind girl and the dead bird, with its head secured with tape, given to her as a pet), but this film attempts to redeem itself (the laughs are principally at the expense of Rosemary’s weight) with a very contrived and sensitive—a word that should describe no aspect of a Farrelly brothers film—ending.
