I am generally unresponsive to actors’ performances in film, being much more interested in the craft of their director. But in this case I was transfixed by Gena Rolands’ performance. She is a mother of three, constantly belittled by her husband and extended family, and all of these frustrations become explicit on Rolands’ face. John Cassavetes’ direction is merited, but the many highlights of this film occur when the camera frames tightly his lead actress’ expressive face.
