What do you think she meant when she said “a huge black monster with giant claws”?
Watch on the Rhine, even though it was adapted by Dashiell Hammett (his only screenplay), remains pure, unadulterated Lillian Hellman: preachy, phony, and full of dialogue made to be perorated instead of acted. The performances of Bette Davis and Paul Lukas (a holdover from the stage production) keep the film grounded (as much as it is grounded), even if the story is something of an anti-fascist parable presented as a morality play for simpletons.
