Golan and Globus’ macho anti-terrorist film is a rather inflammatory little movie, with a handful of villainous Arab stereotypes and a diplomatic strategy that would make even our most hawkish world leaders blanch. Allegedly based on actual events, the film strings together a series of implausible action sequences, mostly involving Chuck Norris (with equally implausible hair) sprinting into buildings filled with terrorists and killing everyone. It is tempting to speculate that the film might make a useful training film for Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib interrogators, with Lee Marvin’s useful suggestion to “find one that speaks English and beat it out of him.”
Still, Cannon really pulled out the stops in the film’s casting. The Delta Force boasts the most impressive line-up of any film since the Airport series: Norris and Marvin as the tough-guy Delta Force commandoes, Robert Forster (!) as the mustachioed head terrorist, and supporting appearances by Robert Vaughn, Shelley Winters, Joey Bishop, George Kennedy, and Hanna Schygulla. Yes, that’s right: Hanna Schygulla.
