The Laborer’s Love / Laogong zhi aiqing / China / 1922

Apparently the earliest existing Chinese film, The Laborer’s Love has the kind of unscripted, slapstick quality characteristic of the early “cinema of attractions.” It is notable for its documentary footage of Shanghai street scenes behind the opening credits, as well as for its rather modern portrayal of a woman participating (even conspiring) in setting up her marriage.
