Seance / Kôrei / Japan / 2000

This adaptation of Mark McShane’s novel, Seance on a Wet Afternoon is neither as good as the first adaptation, the 1964 version filmed by Brian Forbes, nor as good as Kurosawa’s recent work. It is moderately effective as a straight J-horror film, but it lacks the complexity and philosophical bent of Kurosawa’s recent works such as Cure and Bright Future.
