Darkman
USA / 1990

Sam Raimi injects this colorful, comic-bookish adventure with numerous elements of old time monster movies, creating a main character that is at once a murderous, grotesque villain, and yet a pitiable and misunderstood hero.

Dr. Peyton Westlake, played by Liam Neeson, is deprived of his love, his life, even his appearance, and cast adrift in a cruel, unforgiving world. Fueled by an irrepressible rage to take revenge on his enemies, to win back his woman, and regain the happy world he has lost, Westlake finds himself confronted by the fact that the man he once was may be gone forever.

Excellent storytelling, fast-paced action, and never a dull moment, Darkman shows Raimi at the top of his game more than a decade before Spider-Man brought him superstar status.
