The DVD cover is a lying bastard. The movie was almost 20 minutes longer than the cover said it was. It’s still a damn good movie, though.

I found it very interesting that the DVD came with a bunch of extra short films, including a cartoon and newsreel, allowing the home viewer a chance to “experience what it was like to see a movie in the 1930s.” The experiment isn’t a complete success, but it is a unique feature for a Warner Bros. DVD.
As for the film, James Cagney is, as he always is, an amazingly versatile actor. I had just seen him in the musical comedy “Footlight Parade” and it is quite jarring to see him in this film shortly afterwards. “Angels With Dirty Faces” is also a nice showcase for Humphrey Bogart, who makes an impressive supporting character in one of his earliest film appearances.
