Krull / UK / 1983

An endlessly bizarre sci-fi/fantasy epic, Krull manages to weave together a down-to-earth tale of swords and heroes, with out-of-this-world touches like laser-firing lances and a teleporting black fortress. The plot is standard fare: heir to kingdom travels far and wide to win back his beloved and put an end to the evil destroying the world. But Krull rises above its simple storyline thanks to unexpected sci-fi touches, some great unintentional humor, and a few fleeting shots of a young Liam Neeson. Despite borrowing heavily from an assortment of well-known fantasy epics, including Star Wars, Krull is nevertheless a film that has endured as a unique cult favorite. And after witnessing the team of flying horses, the altruistic cyclops, the misanthropic spider woman, and the multipurpose Glaive, I finally understand.
