Dear Frankie / UK / 2004

Fresh off one of last year’s most side-splitting comedies (Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera), Gerard Butler shifts into brooding, dramatic mode, playing the handsome stranger who disrupts the life of a Scottish single mum and her deaf 9-year old son, Frankie. The movie is actually far less horrible than the synopis makes it sound, and director Shona Auerbach deserves credit for largely shying away from sentimentality.
