What do you think she meant when she said “a huge black monster with giant claws”?
I really just don’t get Fritz Lang. I like Metropolis okay. It’s grand and silly and moves along quickly. But this one, for me, is just… meh. Since I’ve just set myself up for a serious flaming, maybe now is not the best time to reveal that I don’t really like Fellini or Kurosawa, either.

Well, I don’t know if I get Fritz Lang all the time either, but I do think that M is a great movie. The palpable atmosphere of paranoia in the town, the manic search for the killer, the frenzy of the kangaroo courtÑit’s an intense and affecting scenario that really pulled me in, and made me both sympathetic for the presumed murderer, and fearful of ever being on the wrong side of a witch hunt.
Who are your favorite directors btw?
I know! I know!
Matt’s favorite directors (no lie) are:
1.) Penny Marshall 2.) Dom DeLuise 3.) Michael Schultz (check him out on the IMDB) 4.) Luis Bunuel
Well, just off the top of my head (and apart from the ones Josh listed), Fassbinder, Altman, Hawks, Varda, Fosse, Powell & Pressburger, Malick, Ophuls, Anger, Bresson. But I’m only interested in directors inasmuch as they are involved in creating a great film. I can’t for example, rightly say that Hitchcock is one of my favorite directors because, alongside his great films, he made some horrific stinkers. The people I just listed are practically incapable of making a bad film.
I happen to admire most of your “off the top” list. Would agree with you on Hitchcock, btw, I found his films to be initially intriguing but not having much repeat viewing value , other than S of a Doubt or S on a Train.
I enjoy your site btw, most of the films that are talked about mirror my cinema interests.
