Sweet Charity / USA / 1969

I’ve had this sitting in my DVD collection for exactly two years. I never got around to watching it because, even though I adore Bob Fosse, I was afraid that two hours and thirty-three minutes of Shirley MacLaine might actually kill me. Luckily, I was wrong.

As Fosse’ first directorial effort, it’s pretty amazing. Some of the non-singing, non-dancing scenes can be a snooze, but once the music cranks up and those leggy dancers get to snapping their fingers and rolling their wrists in that unmistakable Fosse fashion, it’s wild. Some of the song-and-dance numbers still look very fresh and modern, particularly “Hey, Big Spender.” That makes Moulin Rouge look like a cheap music video.
