Songs From the Second Floor / Sånger Från Andra Våningen / Sweden / 2000

At once incisively cynical and hilarious, Roy Andersson’s Songs From the Second Floor bears similarity to more visionary epics of social/corporate malaise: namely, Tati’s Playtime and Gilliam’s Brazil. Andersson’s rigidly formal compositions posit his film as the more scrutinizing and less inventive of the three mentioned here.
