The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy / UK/USA / 2005
I was quite surprised how much I enjoyed this, having heard a lot of mixed reports from friends. Before seeing the film, I wisely refrained from rereading the books (which I hadn’t cracked in about 15 years), so I was quite incapable of nitpicking. And in spite of so many reports of miscasting, I thought all the characters were fairly well realized. Tim from The Office was Tim from The Office — no surprise there. But I was particularly surprised at how good Mos Def was, as he seemed to be the wild card. And I’d watch Zooey Deschanel do just about anything.
But most importantly, the film captures Douglas Adams’ particular wit and imagination rather well, which is really as much as one can ask, isn’t it?
