In its defense, Alexander Payne’s awards darling does not suit categories as well as its laurels suggest. It’s advertised as a comedy, but its comedy – which is typically the result of something that comes out of Thomas Hayden Church’s mouth – is completely overshadowed by Paul Giamatti’s depression; at least, I wasn’t laughing at the latter’s misfortune.
I enjoyed this film, although it’s by and far the lesser of everthing Payne has made thus far.
