Writer Richard Curtis deserves credit for effectively mixing politics with an absorbing plot about a May-December romance, but the sanctimoniousness of one of his lead characters and the pat manner in which the plot moves forward ultimately makes for a frustrating viewing experience. Bill Nighy and Kelly MacDonald are superb (as usual), but one wishes the script gave them a little more breathing room.
