It is with acknowledged hesitance that I admit this as one of my favorite films, which is to say it is my favorite Terry Gilliam film. The latter declaration is the less defendable, perhaps, as The Fisher King’s visual highlights are unremarkable among the images that distinguish Gilliam’s career. Its appeal to me is indistinguishable but personal. It is a film about faith or hope in its most fundamental, abstract manifestation. It is a film with vulnerability. And it is the only film in which I can even remotely tolerate Robin Williams.
