Negative reviews of this film are sparse, and the criticism is generally based on Terrence Malick’s apparent indifference to his characters, or how unsympathetic or impersonal his direction seems. This is incontestably a beautiful film – routinely cited as one of the most beautifully photographed films ever made – and it is also very sympathetic and very personal, only these traits are better manifested in the photography and score than in the broken, colloquial dialogue.
