Batman Begins / USA / 2005
A few weeks ago, I was at a book signing featuring Bruce Campbell, star of the Evil Dead trilogy, and he made an emphatic point that all of us horror, sci fi, comic book, etc. movie lovers out there shouldn’t continue supporting pointless rehashes like Batman Begins. Bruce’s point was that until we show the studios that they can’t make a profit reselling us the same story over and again, they’ll never fork out the cash to support original ideas. And I agree with him in principle. But I still went to see the new Batman and I enjoyed it. Yes, taken strictly in terms of necessity, the world’s understanding of the Batman character would have survived without the film, but it was fun to delve into the Batuniverse for awhile, to see the Batcave take shape, to have a close-up look at all those gadgets, and to see bad guys get their comeuppance.
