Because this film almost immediately precedes the masterpieces that characterize Alfred Hitchcock, this effort is pedestrian in comparison (at least, the lush, fall Vermont setting did not dissuade my preference for the economic and austere bleakness of rural Arizona). And although black humor is in abundance here, the same is better employed in Hitchcock’s penultimate films, namely Topaz and Frenzy.

It’s been many years since the last time I saw this, but the one thing that I distinctly remember is that Shirley MacLaine used to be utterly adorable.
