Bully / USA / France / 2001

If you can tolerate Larry Clark’s exploitation of teenage flesh and debauchery, you may find his confrontational films to be extraordinarily well-rendered. The dialogue emerges organically, as do the characters’ sporadic motivations—in the aftermath of the murder that climaxes this film, naive fascination evolves to crippling paranoia almost immediately. The scene recalls the tragedy, as well as the shaken morality, of Kieslowski’s A Short Film about Killing.
