The Manxman / UK / 1929

Hitchcock’s last silent film focuses on a love triangle on the Isle of Man (hence title) in which no one is murdered or even particularly mean to anyone. The film is rather unusual in Hitchcock’s body of work for its total equanimity towards its characters. No one is portrayed as perverse or conspiratorial, even though the film deals with infidelity, illegitimate children, and so on. This would seem to make The Manxman sound like a dull film, but while it’s no North by Northwest, it’s at very least notable for its understated characterizations, rather progressive sexual politics (in the manner of A Doll’s House and Enoch Arden), and its emphasis on love (platonic and romantic) over lust.
