An Angel at My Table / UK/Australia/New Zealand / 1990

Arguably the most conventional of Jane Campion’s feature-length films, An Angel at My Table largely adheres to traditional biopic structure in recounting the life of famed New Zealand author Janet Frame. Still, Campion’s sensitive evocation of Frame’s fraught childhood and her subsequent ordeal in a mental hospital elevate it above similar works, and the astounding lead performance by Kerry Fox confirms the actress’ status as one of the most underrated talents in film today.
