Rather than making excuses for watching this, I’m going to say it’s a notable instance in Hollywood filmmaking where white-liberal guilt is shoved aside in favor of pure competition. It also features a minority-team winning based upon merit rather than being cast as the immoral, terrifying, inhumane “black” team (Friday Night Lights, I’m looking at you). However, based on the trailer, it is concerning that so much of the parallel story in the East-Compton community was extracted. Of course there’s still the great flirting-while-brushing-teeth scene… and Eliza Dushku in a cheerleader outfit (hey, I’ll admit I’m slightly shallow). I’m actually pretty sure this movie is partially responsible for The O.C..
