The Tales of Hoffmann / U.K. / 1951
I appreciate the insanely lavish visual compositions that The Archers constructed here (which, along with The Red Shoes, I’m sure heavily influenced Baz Luhrmann – groan!), but the story is just rough to get through and slightly lifeless at times. This was a somewhat disappointing outcome considering I’m such an admirer of all the other Powell & Pressburger films I’ve watched thus far.
