Le Samouraï / France / Italy / 1967

Jef Costello embodies a familiar mechanism in Noir, yet he is described in terms of his ingenuity because he has no apparent humanity. He is remarkably efficient, poised, and disaffected, yet he will fail because his stoicism is hindered by the pity of a nightclub singer capable of confirming his involvement in a murder. She spares him at a police lineup, a gesture that trigger’s Jef’s gratitude, and leaves him as good as dead.
