Chungking Express / Chongqing Senlin / Hong Kong / 1994

Watching Chungking Express for the nth time can’t hope to repeat the dazzling effect of first discovering Wong Kar-Wai. The longeurs are more obvious now (Tony Leung’s monologues to objects in his apartment are a little too tiresomely cutesy) and the whole enterprise is pretty thin – Happy Together and In The Mood For Love are so much more substantial works. But the evocation of fast-paced Hong Kong life and the pop charm still hold – as long as you not immune to Faye Wong (I’m not!) or repeated (and repeated) playings of “California Dreaming”.
