Marnie / USA / 1964

A beautiful, rather gothic film. Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery are so perfectly bizarre here — they almost look like aliens. Connery delivers what is probably his most complex performance, translating the unmitigated sexual energy of Bond into something quite sinister. But as perverse as this film is, I find it curiously touching. This is probably thanks to Hedren’s performance, which (like in The Birds) manages to elicit pathos with almost no understanding of her motivations.

Also, that horse scene is just incredible. Not shower-scene incredible, but close.

After watching this again last week, I can say without hesitation that Tippi Hedren is my favorite Hitchcock heroine. Her performance at the end is so hysterical that it borders on excess. While it’s certainly over the top, I’m somehow utterly transfixed by it, even though I’m sure I would be laughing uncontrollably if this performance were handled by any other actress/director. It’s a good thing Hedren was involved The Birds and Marnie, because otherwise I still wouldn’t be able to deal with the fact that she’s responsible for Melanie Griffith.
