The 40 Year-Old Virgin / USA / 2005
This film succeeds at juicing its eponymous concept until all humor is derived—at over two hours, the film excludes no scenario I can think of in which Andy’s virginity may be further exploited. Andy’s maturation (housed in a library of unopened action figures, he is a perpetual child) is triggered not in his outings with his chauvinist coworkers, but in his meeting with Trish—she manages an eBay store, and arranges to sell Andy’s ephemera with no commission. This is also parallel to the two’s burgeoning and decidedly repressed relationship. An unique analogy is manifested, that Andy’s valuable toys are useless on his wall. With great trepidation and urging from everyone in his life, he must open one and play with it. This analogy – along with the closing credits dance sequence – redeems the relentless and increasingly tired humor.
