Rubber Johnny / UK / 2005

This six minutes of footage is the closest thing we get to a feature directed by Chris Cunningham, a combination of flawless special effects and grainy, darkened 8mm footage. We are subjected to the title “character”: a naked, emaciated man with a bulbous cranium, inhabiting some sort of dark basement with a demonic Chihuahua, confined to a wheelchair.

This footage is urgent and hostile, bombarding the viewer intermittently with images of ruptured flesh and ambiguous grotesquerie; it’s inexplicably discomforting, and effortlessly visionary, salting my interest in Cunningham at the helm of something more substantial.

Leo’s thoughts.
