Ryan / USA / 2004

Chris Landreth’s animated short film is mesmerizing, housing a family of obscene caricatures, broken faces held together by sinew, and eruptions of neon fibers to correspond with suddenly elicited emotions. Technically, this is an obvious landmark in computer animation – it looks like an imagined scenario rather than one that strives to duplicate reality with accuracy – but it is depressive as it cements its subject (legendary Canadian animator Ryan Larkin) as an artist overwhelmed by his vices. Larkin, nominated for an Academy Award in 1969, hasn’t produced any work in over twenty-five years; this film about him won an Oscar in 2005.
