Secret Defense / France / 1998

This is one time when Jacques Rivette’s longer-then-usual running length doesn’t work. I wouldn’t sacrifice a minute of La Belle Noiseuse’s four hours, but Secret Defense’s 170 minutes seem thin and over-extended. Sandrine Bonnaire is, of course, great, and the lengthy travel sequences (train, metro) are mesmerising, but the film runs out of steam in the latter half, and the denouement is far too tidy and symmetrical to be at all satisfying.
