The Rite / Riten / Sweden / 1969

This TV production, coming between two of Bergman’s greatest films (namely, Shame and The Passion of Anna) takes the themes and set-up of The Magician (aka The Face) – the clash between bourgeois society and the artist community; sexual hatred; self-hate; humiliation – and strips them down to the point, sadly, of self-parody.

Word to this. I am a drooling Bergman-sycophant, but this is easily my least favorite of his films. Its one saving grace is the image of Gunnar Bjornstrand sporting an erect strap-on.
