This new site feature is a collective effort to summarize our viewing habits. Manderlay / Denmark / Sweden / Netherlands / France / Germany / UK / 2005

Probably The Five Obstructions has offered the truest insight into Lars Von Trier, this impish, playful fellow with an overwhelming conviction of his own brilliance. Does he really have anything to say? And does he care? The guy has an amazing cinematic imagination, but I’ve never felt that he ever really believes in what he’s working on – hence, the need to apply some formal superstructure that he can focus on, rather than mundane concerns like character, narrative, and theme. For all that, I did like (even enjoy!) Dogville; but the repetition in set, tone, and theme in Manderlay made it pretty tiresome for me for the most part. And it does miss the star power of Kidman and the gravitas of Caan.
