Four Brothers / USA / 2005

An engaging premise- four mismatched, multiracial orphans get together to avenge the murder of their adoptive mother- is rendered ludicrous (if rather entertaining) by John Singleton’s heavy handed, high octane filmmaking style. There are a few neat performances- Terrence Howard as a decent cop, Josh Charles as his corrupt partner- but the film drowns in genre cliché, desperate overacting and the obligatory hip hop score.
