What Time is it There? / Ni neibian jidian / Taiwan / 2001

A fan of Tsai Ming-liang, I was pleasantly surprised by this film. Yes, it follows his habit of using broad, motionless camera angles and colorful locales, as well as little dialogue, but What Times is it There? seems more subdued than his more recent films, or even earlier ones like The River. Some great acting on the part of Yi-ching Lu and Kang-sheng Lee, though the appearance of Jean-Pierre Leaud as himself, topping off the references to The 400 Blows, is wasted.
