I admire Roger Ebert’s seemingly exclusive championing of this film (and am impressed with its erroneous inclusion in Acquarello’s selective canon), but I can’t laud the film with a similar enthusiasm. It’s a vision, to be sure, but inhibited by Keifer Sutherland’s nervous mumbling and Jennifer Connelly’s singing. It is such an accurate emulation of Metropolis that it even inherits the silent film’s simple, familiar mutiny.
