Transamerica / USA / 2005

Occasionally predictable but always entertaining, Duncan Tucker’s debut feature benefits from a superb cast dominated by the extraordinary Felicity Huffman, who deserves to take home the honours come March 5th. She won’t, of course- her performance is much too risky, and Reese Witherspoon’s much too loveable- but it’s nice to see the Academy even giving a film like this the nod. Honourable mention, too, for David Mansfield’s typically lyrical score, and some wonderfully incongruous oldstyle bluegrass on the soundtrack.
