C.R.A.Z.Y. / Canada / 2005

What with The Squid And The Whale and Thumbsucker, 2005 was a banner year for films about how tough it is growing up white, middle class and good looking in North America. At least the protagonist of C.R.A.Z.Y. has a decent reason to be disaffected- he’s gay, which is a problem in 1970’s Quebec. For the first hour or so this feels a lot like ‘Malcolm In The Middle- The Movie’, as hero Zac bickers with his three thinly sketched teen cliché older brothers, but director Vallee infuses the proceedings with a freewheeling charm, and by the end has produced something clearly personal, and unexpectedly touching. My biggest qualm: the blindingly obvious choice of period music. Drug taking and ‘White Rabbit’? Again?
