The Village / USA / 2004

Night- as he apparently prefers to be called- could be one of America’s most interesting directors if he could move away from the suspense genre and stop relying on unnecessary twist endings. I think The Village is a beautiful film- the characterisation is subtle and affecting, the use of colour striking and there’s a suitably eerie sense of impending threat. But the plot falls apart towards the end, and only Richie Cunningham’s daughter, in an amazing debut performance, can hold the film together.
