The Maltese Falcon / USA / 1941

One of the best detective flicks around, and the progeniter of the fabled film noir genre, John Huston’s directorial debut gives us Humphrey Bogart at his unflappable, quick-witted, and magnetic best. The superbly paced mystery is also served by the great work of Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Mary Astor as three greedy con artists vying for the untold riches of the titular bird. Wonderful stuff. And that Bogart can take a punch to the throat like no one else.
