The Asphalt Jungle / USA / 1950

Another Huston noir classic, this tale eschews the levity of Sam Spade in favor of a dark, sinister saga of double-crosses, shady pasts, and ruined futures. And unlike other Maltese Falcon-style noirs, where the mystery ultimately takes center stage, the bank heist story here is eventually pushed to the side to make way for characterization—in particular, the saga of Dix Handley, a man seemingly destined not to love or live for long. A grim, engrossing tale.
