A Prairie Home Companion / USA / 2006

Altman and Keillor’s collaboration is a relentlessly charming film, with a gallery of fine performances, a few toe-tapping numbers, a dose of healthy melancholy, a dash of low humor, and some gentle digs at Texas big-business to add a little oblique politics. As an affectionate tribute to all things bygone and bygoing (not to mention its highly self-conscious status as a potential final film from a major filmmaker), the proceedings are a tad overdetermined, with divine visitations and much bubbly, Altmanian cross-talk about the good ol’ days. But Keillor’s wit and placidity win out, and the film’s essential simplicity and goodheartedness make it tender without being cloying.
