The Best of Youth / Lo Meglio Gioventu / Italy / 2003

The one major flaw is that The Best of Youth never fulfils its underlying premise of reflecting Italy’s social/political history through a family’s story over the last 40 years. It is quite moving in parts but overall a little bland and really misses Matteo’s disappearance from the story at the three-quarter mark. The film needs a character like Matteo – confused, conflicted, ambiguous – to give it an edge and a passion. The last quarter is disappointingly banal, and overall The Best of Youth suffers in comparison with another very similar project, the much less-renowned British TV serial from the mid-90s Our Friends in the North.
