Though I admire the cinematography and find incredible mastery and nuance in the acting, I was left yearning for more as the final credits rolled. Lauren Bacall, who infuses Eleanor with such stark and heartless indifference, isn’t given enough lines, and the spectral silence surrounding Anna and Sean fades with the film. Though the bathtub scene is incredibly disturbing, something I accredit to the forementioned silence, it doesn’t save Birth from its all-too-convenient (and, in my opinion, copout) ending.
