Breaking the Waves / Denmark / 1996

This is by now a redundancy, but Emily Watson’s performance in this film is profound, anchoring with unsettling gravity the inherently ambiguous nature of faith. It’s undoubtedly the least polemic von Trier film I’ve seen, which is remarkable considering how both parties in conflict (Watson’s naif bride, and the masculine community that will condemn her to hell) invite criticism. And the ending (which I’ll lift from Ebert in describing it as “cosmic”) is beautiful.
