Down in the Valley / USA / 2005

Edward Norton once again establishes himself as one of the most consistently daring, interesting actors working today. Playing a drifter/wannabe-cowboy named Harlan, he initially lays on the charm, but it soon becomes apparent that his intentions toward 18-year old Tobe (another terrific performance by Evan Rachel Wood) and her family may not be as chivalrous as they seem.

Like many of Norton’s other films, however, what follows is far from predictable. Although the ending is a bit of a stretch in terms of plausibility, the movie nevertheless succeeds as a stunning meditation on the appropriation of the cowboy myth, and an elegy to lost ideals.
