In the Realms of the Unreal / USA / 2004

A sophisticated documentary by Jessica Yu that explores how Henry Darger, an artist, novelist, and recluse, adapted to adult life through his 15,000-page novel. Heartbreaking at times, the man who left only three photographs of himself (but well over 300 paintings of young children with golden locks and wings) typifies the everlasting importance of imagination.

Yu should be given credit for taking on such a limited subject, though I wish the film had been longer. The animation based on Darger’s work, which is delightfully simple, is also incredible. My only issue is that Darger’s famed tome, from which Yu draws much of the story, hasn&#8217t been published; after the film ends, we’re left with a desire to read at least some of his writings, a desire that must go unfulfilled.
