Good Night, And Good Luck. / USA / 2005

There’s so much that Clooney’s film gets right: the greyish black-and-white, the wreaths of cigarette smoke everywhere, the man in baggy suits, the concentration on the life at the office to the exclusion of whatever home life there might be (so that the Downey/Clarkson subplot seems mistaken in the way it takes us into their home), the sense that this is an obituary on the potential that television once had rather than a celebratory tale of the victory over the evils of McCarthyism… But in the end Good Night, and Good Luck. is probably too much in the spirit of Murrow himself: too earnest and a little dull.
